Further Maths Specification

Course overview

Further Mathematics is an optional qualification offered to students who demonstrate strong aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics.  It is designed to stretch and challenge high-attaining students and to support progression to A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Students who achieve a grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics at the end of Year 10 may be invited to sit the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics, alongside their GCSE Mathematics studies in Year 11.

Course content

The Further Mathematics course builds on GCSE Mathematics and includes topics such as:

  • Algebraic manipulation and proof
  • Functions and graphs
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Matrices
  • Trigonometry
  • Introductory calculus (differentiation)

The course places a strong emphasis on algebraic reasoning and problem-solving, with questions designed to challenge students' mathematical thinking and resilience.

  • Develop confidence in tackling complex and unfamiliar problems
  • Strengthen algebraic fluency and mathematical reasoning
  • Prepare students for the demands of A Level Mathematics

Exam Structure

 There are two exams of 1 hour and 45 minutes, they are 80 marks each and paper 1 is non-calculator and paper 2 is calculator.
